The Carribean universe, where we find the
province of Limón, is characterized by a great
cultural diversity. Although its population is predominantly
African black descendents, the visitor may also note
the influence of important cultural features from various
other ethnic groups, such as the Costa Rican Aborigines,
the Afro Caribbean from the West Indies, the Hispanics
of Spanish descent, and the Chinese. Each of these groups
contributes to the very unique style that characterizes
this zone..
In this region you will find beaches in all the different
hues of sand, as well as national parks that shelter
humid tropical forests and coral reefs. In addition
you will experience hundreds of different species of
flora and fauna, some of which are in danger of extinction.
Parque Nacional Tortuguero (Tortuguero National Park),
located in this zone, embraces the largest sample of
protected humid tropical forest in the world. Here,
you will be able to explore its exuberant forest lined
rivers and man-made canals, observe its flora and fauna,
or enjoy the unique experience of marine turtles nesting.
Here, too, you will have the opportunity to observe
more than 300 different species of birds, among which
you will find the Great Green Macaw, the Great Curassow,
and the beautiful toucans.
And if you wish to visit a site considered as a patrimony
of the world, this region also offers you Parque Internacional
La Amistad (La Amistad International Park). This is
a place of exceptional scientific value, of conservation
and of natural beauty.
The Caribbean hosts an environment characterized by
calypso and reggae music, as well as by a delicious
cuisine based on coconut. Surfing, deep-sea diving,
surface snorkeling, yacht tours, horseback or bicycle
tours, and great fishing are some of the activities
