Deep-sea
Fishing:
Costa Rica is well known for its grand diversity
of fish species that inhabit both the Pacific
and Caribbean coasts. In Costa Rica you may
practice sport fishing in places such as the
Gulf of Papagayo, the Manuel Antonio region,
and the Osa Peninsula zone in the Southern Pacific
area.
Species such
as the marlin, the sailfish, the big tunas,
the dorado, the wahoo, the rooster fish and
the snapper are some of the most popular fishes
you can find in the Pacific, while in the Atlantic
the most outstanding species are the tarpon,
the snook, the dorado and the snapper.
Tourists may
rent yachts or sailboats, do a tour to the Tortuga
Island in the Gulf of Nicoya, or navigate one
of the river waterways in this region. It is
also possible to practice water sports such
as skiing or jet skiing.
Fishing
in rivers and small ponds:
Certain lakes, rivers and mountain
streams are also great for fishing species such
as: The "bobo" fish (a type of moss-eating
mullet), the shad, the drum fish, the snook
and the rainbow trout. Excellent spots for the
fishing of tarpon and snook are at the point
of confluence between the San Juan and the Colorado
Rivers, as well as the Sarapiquí, the
San Carlos, the Infiernito, the Pocosol, the
Medio Queso and the Frío rivers. The
best spots for rainbow trout fishing are the
mountains located between San José and
San Isidro del General, as well as the Savegre
River, Tapantí and the San Gerardo de
Dota Valley.
